Torrential rains triggered severe flash floods that swept through parts of eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, killing two children and leaving a trail of destruction, a local official said on Sunday.

The floods affected multiple districts, where at least 280 residential houses were washed away, Qurishi Badlon, the provincial director for Information and Culture, told Xinhua.

The disaster has also severely damaged the region's agricultural sector, said Badlon, adding that around 5,000 acres of farmland were submerged.

According to the official, the number of casualties and the extent of damage could rise as further assessments are underway. Assessment teams have been dispatched to evaluate losses and survey the affected areas.

Afghanistan's weather department has warned of continued rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding in vulnerable regions.
