Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the country has risen to 2,423, including 967 deaths.
The National Public Health Institute reported in its latest update that 79 new cases were recorded on Sunday in the northeastern provinces of Ituri and Kivu.
The United Nations warned on Monday of the risk of Ebola spreading in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in eastern DRC, stressing that overcrowding and limited access to basic services increase the risk of transmission.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that confirmed cases of the virus have been recorded in at least 16 IDP camps in Ituri province, the current epicenter of the outbreak, which houses more than 270,000 people.
