A terminal at Heathrow Airport was evacuated after firefighters responded to a “possible hazardous materials incident”.
The UK’s busiest airport had warned travellers not to go to Terminal 4 after it closed its check-in and moved passengers away on Monday evening.
Crowds gathered outside the terminal and staff were seen handing out foil blankets to passengers as temperatures began to fall.
Eyewitnesses said they felt confused as “no one really knew what was going on”.
Heathrow said it was standing down the incident and allowing passengers back inside the terminal at around 8pm. According to the airport's website, flights are still scheduled to depart on time, with only one delay to a Saudia airline flight to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia so far.
But National Rail said trains are currently unable to call at Terminal 4 due to the incident.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said earlier this evening: “Firefighters are responding to a possible hazardous materials incident at Heathrow Airport.
"Specialist crews have been deployed to carry out an assessment of the scene, and Terminal 4 has been evacuated as a precaution whilst firefighters respond.”
