FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed on Thursday that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and play its matches in the United States as originally scheduled.
Infantino made the remarks during the 76th FIFA Congress at the Vancouver Convention Center, where football officials from around the world gathered to discuss tournament arrangements, rule changes and preparations for the upcoming event.
Addressing rumors over Iran's participation amid recent regional tensions, Infantino said, "Let me start confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026. And of course, Iran will play in the United States of America."
The confirmation came after Iranian officials had previously suggested moving their group-stage matches from the United States to Mexico, a proposal rejected by FIFA. U.S. government officials have recently expressed a welcoming stance toward the Iranian team.
The congress is taking place as Vancouver prepares to serve as one of the host cities for the first 48-team World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
