About 1,500 people demonstrated on Monday evening in front of the Simon Bolivar statue in the Portuguese capital to protest what they described as an illegal attack by the United States on Venezuela.
According to Lusa News Agency, the rally was organized by the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation. Demonstrators strongly condemned what they called "U.S. military aggression," chanting slogans such as "For peace! No to U.S. aggression against Venezuela" and "Latin America is not the United States' backyard."
Rejecting the U.S. action in an independent country, the protesters directed chants at U.S. President Donald Trump and called on him to refrain from interfering in Latin American affairs.
In its official response, the Portuguese government expressed serious concern over the situation in Venezuela on Sunday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for de-escalation, respect for international law, and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
