A multi-vehicle accident on an expressway in Mexico has left at least 21 people dead and several injured.

The accident involving three vehicles occurred on an expressway connecting the southern state of Oaxaca and the central state of Puebla on Wednesday morning.

Local authorities say the injured received treatment at medical facilities. The authorities say a tanker struck a bus in the opposite lane when it tried to overtake another vehicle. It then collided with the vehicle it was attempting to pass.

Footage taken at the scene shows smoke billowing from the tanker truck after it fell into a ravine, and firefighters responding to the situation.
