Five people have been shot at a school in central Sweden, police have said. The incident happened in Örebro, 200km west of Stockholm, on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the extent of the injuries was unclear and warned that the “danger wasn't over”. Students are being sheltered in nearby buildings. Other parts of the school were evacuated following the violence.
he incident took place before 1pm local time with officials urging residents to stay away from the school. The Swedish news agency TT has reported that the perpetrator died by killing themself. Police did not immediately issue a confirmation. The shooting took place at an adult education centre, the Associated Press reported. It is understood to have occurred at a Komvux, a centre primarily attended by people who did not finish primary or secondary school.
Police said students at nearby schools are being kept indoors "for security purposes". Police didn't immediately say whether a suspect had been apprehended. "The reports of violence in Orebro are very serious. The police are on site and the operation is in full swing. The government is in close contact with the police, and is closely following developments," Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer told Swedish news agency TT.
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported one person trapped in the school saying "we have heard several shots outside". The newspaper also quoted a person who had received a text from a teacher at the school saying "there was a shooting with automatic weapons". It said local emergency and intensive care departments are being made ready for casualties.
