U Khin Yi, a member of parliament from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was elected as the new Speaker of Myanmar's Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) in a parliament session held in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, according to state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television.

U Khin Yi was elected during the first session of Myanmar's third Pyithu Hluttaw. U Khin Yi, chairman of the USDP, became a member of parliament after winning the general election for the Zeyathiri township constituency.

The first day of the first regular session of the third Pyithu Hluttaw saw full attendance, with all 373 members of parliament present, according to MRTV.

The new Speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) will be elected on Wednesday.

Myanmar's USDP won a majority of seats in the Union Parliament in the general election held earlier this year, according to official results released by the Union Election Commission.

Myanmar's Union Parliament consists of two houses, with a total of 664 seats: the 440-seat Pyithu Hluttaw and the 224-seat Amyotha Hluttaw.

The newly formed Union Parliament will elect a new president, who will then form a new Union Government.
