The United States has reduced its military presence in Nigeria, withdrawing a significant portion of its 200 troops deployed to support operations against armed groups in the country's north-east.
US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a briefing in Luanda on Friday that the forces had been deployed for a specific mission carried out jointly with Nigerian troops in May.
General Dagvin Anderson said the US had withdrawn a large part of the forces following the completion of that operation, while stressing that Washington continues to cooperate with Abuja on intelligence sharing and support for complex security missions.
Nigeria's Defense Minister Christopher Musa said the US troops were deployed specifically for the May operation in the Lake Chad Basin.
