An accident during the Tour du Rwanda on Sunday left two people dead and six others injured in eastern Rwanda, according to a statement from the Rwanda Cycling Federation.

The incident occurred in the Gabiro area of Gatsibo District during the 173.6-km opening stage from Rukomo to Rwamagana, when a caravan vehicle lost control, veered off the road and hit several fans who had gathered along the roadside to watch the race.

"Sadly, two people lost their lives and six others were injured. The injured are receiving care, and we are closely following their condition," said the statement.

The Rwanda National Police has launched investigations to establish the cause of the crash. Organizers also extended condolences to the bereaved families and reaffirmed their commitment to spectator safety.

The 18th edition of the Tour du Rwanda began on Sunday, with activities centered in Kigali, the Rwandan capital. The cycling competition, running through March 1, is expected to feature at least 18 teams, according to organizers.

Recognized by the Union Cycliste Internationale as a 2.1-category event, the race is the only competition of its level in Africa and attracts professional international teams as well as significant global media attention.
