At least five people were killed Saturday in a crash involving two passenger vehicles and a light cargo truck in Peru's southern Tacna region, local media reported.

The accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. local time on a highway near Campo de la Alianza, when an interprovincial bus collided with an interurban passenger vehicle and the truck, private radio station Exitosa reported.

Police sources said that the crash may have occurred after the bus attempted to overtake the truck and entered the opposite lane, striking the other passenger vehicle.

Private broadcaster Radio Programas del Peru reported that at least 15 injured people were taken to a nearby hospital in Tacna.

Traffic on the highway was blocked, and investigations are under way.
