Australia's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.4 percent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) in the third quarter of 2025, according to official data released on Wednesday, falling short of economists' expectations.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said that GDP rose by 0.4 percent in the three months to the end of September, down from 0.7 percent in the preceding June quarter, but slightly higher than the 0.3 percent growth reported in the third quarter of 2024.

Australia's GDP rose by 2.1 percent in the year to September, up from 0.8 percent in the 12 months to September 2024, and has grown for seven consecutive quarters.

Economists from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), the nation's largest bank, had predicted GDP growth of 0.7 percent for the September quarter. Economists at another large bank, Westpac, had forecast 0.8 percent GDP growth.

Grace Kim, head of national accounts at the ABS, said in a media release on Wednesday that the 0.4 percent growth matches the quarterly average since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

GDP per capita was flat in the third quarter of 2025 as economic growth was in line with population growth but remained 0.4 percent higher than a year ago, said Kim.

The ABS said that private investment contributed 0.5 percentage points to GDP growth in the quarter and housing investment contributed 0.2 percentage points.

Household spending rose by 0.5 percent on a quarterly basis, contributing 0.3 percentage points to GDP growth.

Net trade detracted 0.1 percentage points from GDP growth, with the rise in goods and services imports outpacing that of exports, and changes in inventories detracted 0.5 percentage points as mining inventories were drawn down to service increased export demand.
