Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia hit a record high in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, while internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles recorded their lowest quarterly market share, according to industry data.

The latest quarterly sales report for light vehicles published by peak industry body the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) on Monday showed that 29,298 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold in the three months to Sept. 30, beating the previous record set in the preceding June quarter.

The BEV market share for new light vehicle sales rose to a record 9.70 percent in Q3, up from 6.59 percent during the same period in 2024 and 9.31 percent in Q2 2025.

ICE vehicles accounted for 69.65 percent of new sales in Q3, marking the lowest quarterly market share on record, according to the AAA.

New hybrid vehicle sales also rose to a record high of 49,929 over the three-month period and the hybrid market share of 16.52 percent was the second-highest on record.

The AAA said that new hybrid vehicles have outsold new BEVs for nine consecutive quarters.
