Australia's four-time Olympic champion and women's 200m freestyle world record holder Ariarne Titmus has announced her retirement from competitive swimming.

"I've always loved swimming, it's been my passion since I was a little girl," Titmus said in a video posted on social media on Thursday. "But I guess I've taken this time away from the sport and realized some things in my life that have always been important to me are just a little bit more important to me now than swimming."

Titmus, 25, finished her career with eight Olympic medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games, including four golds. She also won nine world championships medals, including four golds.
